GUARDALAVACA — With several more weeks of winter weather no doubt waiting for most Canadians – despite what the calendar says – there’s still time to get clients out of the cold and into Gran Muthu Almirante Beach Hotel.

The Cuban resort, featured in Hola Sun Holidays’ winter program, was one of the stars of the show on Hola Sun’s FAM to Holguin and Santiago de Cuba last fall. Hola Sun hosted Canadian travel advisors and members of the media, including Travelweek, on the FAM.

We recently were invited on a FAM trip by Hola Sun Vacations to experience what there is to offer on the east side of Cuba. After only having been to Varadero a few times in the past with day trips to Havana, we were very impressed by Holguín and its surrounding areas. A Cuban fam trip clearly can lead to a little Dancing With the Stars Cuba-style.

A recent Hola Sun fam to Holguin featured visits to a number of area resorts, with participating agents being greeted upon arrival at each property by dance troupes and Cuban music.

Dance-mad Cuba has given the world several musical expressions, including salsa, mambo, cha cha cha and son, and agents were routinely treated to different displays of the Latin country’s culture.

HOLGUIN — While Cuba’s gorgeous beaches sparkled and wowed on a recent Hola Sun Holidays fam, the tour operator also took care to showcase the country’s rich culture and traditions.

The resulting experience was immersive and illuminating, leaving participants with a newfound appreciation for the richness and diversity of eastern Cuba as a destination.

Hola Sun, the Cuba Specialist, hosted Canadian travel advisors and members of the media, including Travelweek, on the fam. With so many interesting spots highlighted during the week-long trip, this article will touch on Holguin, with an Santiago de Cuba update coming soon.

Santiago de Cuba was among the first seven cities found by Spanish in the 16th century, and it served as Cuba’s first capital city until the early 17th century. You can only imagine how historically rich this area is and how much it has to offer for a Canadian traveller.

Located in the southeastern area of Cuba, Santiago is home to the finest rum distillers, coffee plantations, traditional Cuban music, the first house and cathedral built on the island, and so much more. Santiago is considered to be the most Caribbean city in Cuba. It has been heavily influenced by trade and immigration from other parts of the Caribbean islands. Because of that, the city has the most vibrant culture, traditions, dances, carnivals etc.
